G’day Terrance! I thought I would do this before I lost my nerve! I haven’t drawn in forever, so my style is very rusty. I also did some photos, with your Comic in mind. I tried to set the right tone, of something not quite right in the world. I hope I managed to do this…. Your work has unearthed my creative dark side, it has been hidden away for way too long! :)
All of the photos are titled, and done by me.
I hope it is what you are looking for. If not, well, at least I had a lot of fun taking them!

My name is Samantha Michelle McClure and I approve of this submission.
In an attempt to ‘leave -my- mark’ I decided to enter this contest for the love of the comic it represents. While I only have the first two of the comics (want to get the signed ones ;} ) I hope that my artwork represents The Molting well enough.

This is supposed to be the main character Susie as her older self, holding onto her younger self. The symbolism is that admist the chaos of her life she has to hold onto herself as a way of remembering her past is a part of her.

    Background done in purple watercolors.

I decided that my entry should mirror my reasoning for why I love The Molting…It is a chance to partake in it’s creators lives. The inspiration we receive from our excessive page thumbing wouldn’t be what it is without the personality of it’s creators. My entry is a compilation of what I enjoy just as much as the story/art/beautiful chaos The Molting delivers….What mark would we leave without the influential masterminds behind the addictive project….
So here is my mark, a montage homage to the stories within the story.

My submission is a floral foam sculture set up as a symbolic display of the series. There is a doll’s head and mockingbird feather which are used to express the feeling of innocence ripped from Susie at such a young age. There is a theater mask with a smile on a broken hinge showing that no matter how hard you try to repress feelings, they’ll show through eventually. The hour glass represents time. Also, there is a spray paint can that reads “I left my mark”. These four objects stacked on the right each stand for one of the four issues. At the top left of the gray wall is an “all seeing eye” with a roach in the center. The shows the holder of our secrets, the roaches, are always there watching, yet they tell no one of what they see.
The materials I used consisted of:
Green blocks of floral foam, acrylic paint, cardboard and toothpicks. All of the objects are made of carved foam and have been painted.

Skidding in for a somewhat last minute entry! I’m not particularly good with illustration or photography, so I went with my preferred medium of metal (and a wee bit of bone).

    “Tender Infestation”

    On their own:

    http://www.kindofstrange.com/images/lj/infestationset.JPG

    The necklace on its own:

    http://www.kindofstrange.com/images/lj/infestationnecklace.JPG

A close-up showing how the earpiece fits on the ear:

    http://www.kindofstrange.com/images/lj/InfestationOnEar.JPG

The set on the ‘model’ aka, the tired artist:

    http://www.kindofstrange.com/images/lj/InfestationSetWorn.JPG

The idea behind these is to represent the ‘infestation’ of old memories. You know how it is; you’ll be sitting at your desk minding your own business, when suddenly an old memory skitters across your brain, pulling up emotions, whispering thoughts and images of the past. They collect around us constantly, gathering as we grow older and experience the world, darting into focus as we rouse them from their hidden nests in the recesses of our minds.

A large group of cockroaches is known as an Intrusion. So too does this tender infestation of memories intrude upon our lives, for good or for ill.

Materials: Bronze metal clay, old ‘Thing Maker’ roach molds, sterling silver, copper, leather, mink rib bones

Some in-progress photos and notes will follow up on my site within the next week, if anyone is interested in seeing how this came together! (http://www.kindofstrange.com)

I made a facsimile of Anthony’s headstone out of styrofoam for the rubbing, and made Susie look a little like the haunted women and ghosts in Japanese prints. The lyrics, well, I think they emphasize Susie great sense of loss. The colors I choose for her anger and the tragedy in her life. She’s haunted, and I tried to capture that.
