A year and some days ago, issue one of The Molting, “Guilty Susie”, was released into the world. For my collaborators and I, this was our first foray into the world of comics and independent publishing. We didn’t know quite what to expect. Twelve months and four issues later, we’re clawing through stacks of fan art, trying to decide which piece should win The Molting Comic’s “Leave Yer Mark” Art Contest.

We’re happy to say that this was no easy feat as so many of the submissions are fantastic. With forty-five independent entrees—several containing more than one image for consideration—we had a lot of material to choose from.

Before announcing the winning piece, we’d like to recognize some exceptional entrees:

In the just-plain-adorable department, is this crochet Susie by Prisca and plush cholo lobster by Courtney.

In the emotionally striking arena, Samantha McClure’s illustration “Holding Onto Yourself” and Cynthia Jade’s “Weapon” photo shoot deserve major kudos.

And now… drum roll, please… the winning piece…

“Newborns” by Shirak (Begoña Fernández Martín)! Her winning illustration will be featured in the upcoming issue five of The Molting, “Mother’s Day”, available on October 15, 2010 at TheMoltingComic.com.

Congratulations, Shirak, and a big thank you to all of the contestants for leaving yer mark! If you haven’t already done so, we invite everyone to pursue all of the wonderful “Leave Yer Mark” submissions at http://www.themoltingcomic.com/contest/submit/#comments.
