The Tutor wants those of you who adopted some of his 6-legged children at The Tutor’s Gallery to share with the class, as often as possible, exploits with your new pets!  Your homework assignment is to observe, take pictures, and post stories about your arthropod adoptee’s in the “Comments” section here!

I have now adopted little Dante and Ulysses (given names used) and will hopefully be able to document our exploits (:

Today I brought home my two hissers, once named Jarvis and Sterling, now James and Timothy.

As soon as I got home, I put them in a larger cage and gave them a grape and a little doggie chow.

Off to buy some substrate tomorrow. :D

They will be my first non-mammalian pet, so I am rather excited!

My boyfriend and I picked up a pair as well! They were given the names Porter and Silas, but we renamed them Appa and Momo! Once I’ve given them more time to adjust we’ll have a little photoshoot with them :-D

I should have got one, but like I said at the event, my mom would have FREAKED OUT if I brought home a pair of them. Plus I was terrified. :D

I adopted Cornelia and Eloise, which I am going to keep the names you choose. I purchased a plastic pet cage, and aspen flakes, and I put the little girls into their new home earlier today. At first they refused to come out of their travel case, but as soon as I stopped hovering, they started to move around. I dropped some apples pieces in but they are currently, and have been since I put them in their home, hiding under the aspen flakes.

Here are some pictures of their home:

By the way, somehow it does not surprise me that you know where we all live.

I have adopted Jasper and Gideon. (I love their names to much to want to change them <3)

They seem to be enjoying their new home, especially Jasper who can’t seem to sit still! The only thing I’m not sure of is what kind of dry dog food would be best?
(Can anyone recommend a good brand they seem to like?)

I’ll be posting pictures as soon as they adjust! ^-^

Hissies have their cage all set up + a heat pad since my house can get kinda cold.

They don’t seem to be eating at all, but maybe they are still getting used to their new home.

They currently have a piece of grape, tomato and potato in their habitat, as well as a little dry dog food. I hope to see some nibbles from them by next morning! :O

@Lauren I haven’t purposely fed cockroaches before but for high quality dog food I usually recommend Eukanuba.

If you cruise the pet stores on the weekends there is usually a food rep for some of the brands who will give samples or check the shelves for free sample packs. It’s probably a good way to keep your new pets in a steady supply of fresh food.

I decided not to adopt any roaches because I would only end up eating them.

SO glad to see as many of you posting as there has been, so far! I know I’ve kept tabs with a few of you, in regards to your babies, but I hope to keep hearing more and more! At some point, soon, I’ll take some pictures of the few I even took home – all my little disabled ones – and the pair my mum and dad even decided they wanted!

@beyond_repair Unfortunately, just about every last hisser nymph we had has found a home, but, if you’re really interested, there are several places online (www.kenthebugguy.com or http://www.bugsincyberspace.com) to buy them! If you have any nearby reptile/exotic pet stores, too, they usually tend to carry hissers (and probably for a lot cheaper, when you take into consideration the epic shipping you have to pay for the online purchases)!

If I didn’t have two cats and a mom who is phobic of cockroaches above all else…. I wish I could have attended the gallery but with school and lack of funds I had to stay home. But I have been working on my other works for AP art and I will keep in mind each of the lessons you have taught me ^^

I held Cornelia today and I don’t think she was particularly happy that I yanked her out of her home. These girls are very mellow. Which is good, because I like mellow. I mean hyper is awesome too. They move to a section and sit there for about 12 hours and then move on to another spot. Like most females, they like to sit together. Here are some pictures of my little darling out and about.

Neither one is eating much. Is it because they arent interested in the food, or are they just extremely slow eaters? They have some grapes so hopefully they will enjoy those.

  15. 15 Kathy said at 5:22 pm on November 3rd, 2010:

Yesterday I walked up to check on James and Timothy, to see they had done a little moving! They switched the location of the cardboard roll and the inverted paper cup, and the paper cup was on its side, and in a completely different position.

    Did they really move it, or did the cup just fall over and somehow move the roll? It couldn’t have been another person, since my sister doesn’t like them much. So weird. o_O;

    JAMES MOLTED.
    AND I MISSED IT.
    NOOOOOOO (>;A;)>

All that’s left is two of his antennae, and he’s HUGE!
Timmy is still small though so maybe I’ll be lucky to catch his molt. :D

*sigh* I really miss my weekly art challenges

  19. 19 Kathy said at 10:47 pm on November 21st, 2010:

    Timmy has followed his bro and molted too, and I seem to have missed it as well. o_O;

I have also now discovered that they seem to respond best to apples, grapes and carrots. :D

One of my little darlings molted over night. Scared $hit outta me this morning. I think it was Eloise, but one of them was on the bottom all white and I thought she died! She moved however and I was relieved. Sadly I didn’t look up what a molting looked like when I got them but I now know!

Recently, both Cornelia and Eloise molted. They are about 2 inches now, and they freaked out a few of my friends who expected them to be smaller. (Oops, I guess I forgot to tell them) Here’s some more pictures of them…

You cant tell, but they are bigger in this one. This picture is post-molting, and the rest are pre-molting.

They hissed the other night; which scared the living daylights out of me. I was sitting in my room, and all of a sudden one of them randomly hissed. I looked up, and it turns out one of my rats had climbed up on the bars of his cage closest to the girls and I guess it must have frightened one of the them. I’m pretty sure it was Eloise who hissed, and I don’t think it was Cornelia who provoked a hiss out of her. (She was on the other side of the cage) Eloise was on the side of her home closest to my rats. It made me wonder, since they are bigger now do they need a bigger home?

Hey, sorry about not having cockroaches yet. I watched all the videos and met you once at Comicpalooza in Texas I was with the girl dressed as Graverobber. I had a quick question. How come on this website there’s no noticeable mention of Billy Poulos (The Subject)? I was curious when I saw the final video and the wig fell off on whether or not that was a guy or a flat chested girl. They do come that flat sadly. I know a girl with them that small. Any ways just wondering. A reply to this would be awesome if you have the time.
