3rd Quarter Review

Posted: August 24th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: 3rd Quarter Review | 50 Comments »

Hello, students.  As our still lifes near completion, our class is also reaching its homestretch.  There’s only one month of lessons left to go, but before we embark on this last leg of our journey together, let’s pause for a 3rd quarter review.

As a refresher, The Tutor has prepared a recap of the creation phase of our ongoing project… so grab a study buddy, put on your thinking caps, and watch this overview of Lessons VII-XI:

Now that you’ve freshly acclimated yourself with the phases of still life painting, are you ready to put your knowledge to the test?  Are you ready to surrender… to a pop quiz?

Excellent.  When I give the word, answer the multiple-choice questions below.  When you are finished, please answer the following essay question in the “Comments” section above: in 100-words-or-less, let The Tutor know which of your homework assignments you are most pleased with, and why.  Please include a link to the assignment with your answer.

As always, The Tutor will not tolerate flimflam during test time… so no cheating!  If you finish early, please remain in your seat, put your head down, and try not to dwell on impure thoughts.

Okay, students, you may begin the exam.  Good luck!

There are a total of 15 multiple-choice questions in your exam, plus 1 essay question. Please ensure that you submit an answer to each question.  Results will be posted in next week’s lesson plan.

Best of luck, students!

1.) Thus far, what part of The Tutor’s subject has a cockroach not crawled upon?

2.) According to The Tutor, our eyeballs are what?

3.) When sketching our subject, we should begin with which of the following?

4.) In Lesson X, what does The Tutor say separates an artist form the herd?

5.) Finish the following statement by The Tutor from Lesson VII: “Like a god, we must ________.”

6.) According to The Tutor, a lady does not what?

7.) When painting a still life, we should begin by painting which of the following?

8.) Pure, unmixed white may only be used when painting what?

9.) When painting a subject, always begin with the darkest values, unless painting with which of the following mediums?

10.) In Lesson X, what color lipstick does The Tutor apply to his subject?

11.) In Lesson VII, when trolling for a subject, The Tutor begins by doing what?

12.) Which of the following is not on The Tutor’s table in Lesson XI?

13.) According to The Tutor, when sketching, it helps to imagine our subject as what?

14.) What does The Tutor compare the white of his subject’s eye to in Lesson XI?

15.) In Lesson IX, what is The Tutor chewing on?

I think the one im most pleased with so far is the details, even though for mine thats just the boarder. Im most pleased with it because it shows another one of the things i most love and am slightly obsessed with.

Of my completed assignments, I am most proud of my work in Lesson 3. I’m clearly far more adept as an organizer than I am as a painter. Since there’s no way I can win the Tutor over with my artistic talents (or considerable lack thereof, really), perhaps my work will have impressed upon him that I am both neat and resourceful. I could never dream of being his equal – which is, perhaps, why I’ve been so afraid to turn in any further work that deals with the drawing/painting – but maybe I can prove myself a worthy assistant.

    Hiya Tutor! *waves*

The lesson i have been most pleased with so far has been lesson VI.

I’d never thought about having an artistic ‘voice’ before, and while i found it hard to come up with something, i really enjoyed my end result. I’m only recently learning about photoshop, and i was really pleased with the result i got from this one :) From now on, in most of my artworks, i’ll be trying to give myself a succinct ‘voice’ through a developing style.

I am most pleased with assignment 11 ( http://jackiephoto.deviantart.com/art/The-Tutor-Lesson-XI-Highlight-175940497?q=gallery%3AJackiePhoto%2F1834816&qo=0 ) and assignment 9 ( http://jackiephoto.deviantart.com/art/The-Tutor-Lesson-IX-To-Light-173811218?q=gallery%3AJackiePhoto%2F1834816&qo=2 ). Both of these assignments challenged me to really work my medium (words) as if they were paint; to take a simple idea and create a living, breathing world out of them. Both of these poems are my favorites because they both get very strong reactions for different reasons, understandably. These lessons have been invaluable to me to learn how to craft my poetry more effectively and to more of a purpose.

I had fallen away slightly from drawing and painting in favour of creating music. It is through completing lessons like my selected favourite that I have once again grown passionate about creating an image.

My favourite lesson/submission is Lesson Seven. I had tried my best to create an image that was fun, horrific and surreal and it was at this point, by first putting this image onto paper, that the possibilities were endless. It’s going to be very interesting comparing my work at this point to the finished article.

Of my completed projects, I suppose that I prefer lesson two. It was early enough that I wasn’t able to plan any underlying plot for my responses, so I was forced to scramble weekly. Once I started building my still life, things slowed significantly. The hunt for required items was slow and daunting in places, not to mention the arduous assembly process. Despite still having little that I can show, I’ve enjoyed the amount of time, and of myself that I’ve been forced to pour into my homework. I would however, like to apologize for going slightly over my word limit.

Of all the assignments I’ve been working on, I am most pleased with Lesson IX: Dark to Light. I was surprised at how well the painting turned out. I’ve never used that method before, and I admit that I was a little skeptical. However it worked beautifully and I really feel like I’m learning a lot.

    ……..
The previous two assignments have been late because I’m a very bad, bad girl… and have been starting Uni and trying to direct this play to teach Freshmen how to not get drunk and molest their roommates. I know that Class should take priority over real life, but I promise that I haven’t been slacking in the work, only the video editing. They should all be up by thursday at the latest.

I suppose if one must be chosen it is Lesson II: Sharpening a Pencil, because we had not yet started painting and in my imagination I got to use an axe and sword.

Even though it was so very long ago when I took Art in school, I have never been exploded to this method. By painting the dark areas as shapes and working up from there to the lighter colors, it added so much depth to my work.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2FaPHwaCWA

This was the heart of our paintings, without this step our paintings would be flat and lifeless. It was also during this lesson my plot to rid myself of an annoyance which had come to plague me began.

Dark to Light was the lesson I found the most intimidating, but ended up being the one I was most pleased with. Putting big expanses of dark paint all over my sketch was scary. I thought I’d ruin my painting. So I was pleased that by following the Tutor’s instructions not only was my painting not ruined, but it turned out better than I thought it would. This bolstered my confidence in painting, which was at zero when I began. And the surprising result of this is that a few days ago I started a second large still life. Amazing!

  13. 13 Stacey M said at 5:28 pm on August 24th, 2010:

I’m ashamed… I didn’t paint a thing. I’m a sculptor, and the only painting I partake in is of 3 dimensional objects.. I did, however, watch each of the tutor’s lessons, totally transfixed. Was it his spine-(and other parts)-tingling voice? His to-die-for apron? That riveting gaze? The way he gently posed his subject? One can only imagine (and fantasize about) how he acquired those scratches…….
Admitedly, I’m a big fan of Madagascar Hissing Roaches as well…..

I would have to say that my favorite lesson was lesson 11: the highlights. Adding the highlights really made my painting stand out. I’m actually quite surprised I have gotten this far. I didn’t think I had it in me to paint much less draw. These lessons have boosted my confidence in my artistic abilities. Even after these lessons I think I will make drawing and painting another hobby of mine. You’ve coaxed me out of my shell thanks Tutor.

On another note, I thought this week’s session was going to be Lesson 12. As it is not, Lesson 12 is most likely going to be late, in addition to Lessons 13 & 14.

  18. 18 mzlaveau said at 10:14 pm on August 24th, 2010:

    Well Tutor,
I enjoyed lesson IX the most. I too often don’t make time for my art, ’cause life does intrude. I’m very satisfied with the result, despite my issue with edges. Also, when I don’t exercise my creative muscles, I get really frickin’ rusty with my technique. I hate that. The two objects I chose have some serious personal meaning for me. Meaning that would definitely take more than 100 words. And probably put all y’all to sleep as well, so I’ll leave it at the fact that they are both very old and treasured. Which is a little bizarre for a weapon, I know, but that’s me. Maybe Dad is right;)

I’m going to say Lesson 10: The Details, for pretty much the same reason I chose Lesson 6: Selecting a Subject as my favourite in the last test. This homework gave me a bit more of a chance to do my own thing artistically, which was fun. Apart from enjoying the homework, I am also pleased with how the painting itself is turning out.

There is no good excuse for being so late turning this all in, but I think I might blame it on pro tools…. on that note I have a special creation in the works that I really look forward to sharing! I may actually be able to pull off a video as well….

I am planning on attending the Gallery viewing in Oct…. need to get out of the mountains for a little while and get some culture!!! This is the perfect reason to head west!

    Tutor,
Just an observation about the pop quiz. I had just about scrubbed the mental image of emerging guinea worm from my brain, and you had to mention it again in the quiz. The past 24 hours, I’ve gone about business as usual, and then, out of nowhere…
Cue the strings from “Psycho” screee-screee-screee. And there it is AGAIN! Subtle, sneaky Tutor. So I try and think happy thoughts. Think happy thoughts, – kittens, Halloween candy, a supple new sap…

Drawing from big to small is the homework assignment that I am most pleased with. For one, I was confident in my drawing abilities, because I drew my arm the year before, and it came out looking like my arm! (WOW) So, when I did fairly well with my subjects, I was happy. (I think I did better with drawing the lighthouse and flowers, than with painting it.)
I’m also happy with Stockholm Syndrome, which was the piece of writing I put into the video through annotations to fill the silence. (However, I’ve done much better work than that before. :( )

Really, Tutor, for shame. I have never been so tempted to get answers on a multiple choice quiz wrong, for the sheer humor of the statements. A true lady never DOES let her NRA membership lapse. That said, the essay portion of this assignment:

I am still proudest of my homework for lesson two. I think it has been the most exciting to watch, and the most fun to do. As far as the progress made, I am proudest of Lesson nine. I enjoy feeling accomplished at the end of an assignment, even if it involves drying periods between spurts of progress. I am aware that one of my shortcomings as an artist is my lack of patience and short attention span in reference to my projects. This class has helped with that, though, through its (at times) irritatingly slow pace.

I am most pleased with Lesson 9 and 11. I couldn’t decide between them. Lesson 9 was good to me because I never believed I could draw/paint so this was a real discovery for me. I had no confidence in art and well I have a little now. I like the fact I actually shaded something instead of just avoiding it. Lesson 11 because I am proud of my different idea towards highlights and am quite happy with my video editing. Although I wish I could have taken some of the video myself. I like all lessons with the Tutor.

I am most pleased with my work on Lessons IX and XI, the former because I expected to ruin my painting at that point. Working from dark to light was completely new for me, but it was much more effective than the \”technique\” I learned in my college painting class. http://mystpixi.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2w130p
I am pleased with the latter primarily because the perfume vials look (in my opinion) much more three-dimensional. http://mystpixi.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2x51dx

You know in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, when Indy says “Why’d it have to be snakes?” Well, I have a similar situation with cockroaches, due to childhood trauma.
So here is some sketching, and a tale about that. Watching may be little dull, as I am just drawing, but you can just listen to it if you like, fellow students and Tutor.

I always have trouble with “favorite” questions because my favorites are perpetually evolving. I have spent the past week cycling through my videos and even after a week of deliberation I still could not choose a favorite. So I looked to Proust and Pivot who are known for their “favorite” questions and the expectation of their interviewee to answer with the first thing that comes to mind. My instant reaction to your question was last week’s video because it was the freshest in my mind, I stepped very far out of my comfort zone and took numerous risks with video.
