Lesson X: The Details
Posted: August 10th, 2010 | Author: The Tutor | Filed under: Lesson X | 47 Comments »Can you believe that this our 11th week together, students? For a little over 2 months now, we’ve shared this classroom. We’ve painted straight lines together, sharpened pencils together, and even evaded capture together. The Tutor is proud of you for hanging in there this long.
The Tutor is aware that the last few lesson have been especially challenging. The painting of a still life has pushed many of you beyond what you believed to be your artistic precipice. You rose to The Tutor’s challenge, however, and fought through your fears to explore new artistic terrains. For that, you deserve a treat: I give you Lesson X: The Details:
Congratulations on conquering another lesson, pupils! This week’s homework assignment is to have fun with your artwork.
That’s right, class; The Tutor wants you to have fun with your artwork! The process of creation can be so intensive, so laborious, that joy is often overlooked. It’s important to always find pleasure in our craft, especially with the task is daunting.
So, take a step back from your in-progress painting, relish in what you’ve been able to accomplish thus far, and treat yourself to a little creative indulgence.
This indulgence may come in the form of expressive splashes added to your painted still life, or it may be an act of creation completely independent from any of The Tutor’s assignments. Your treat may manifest itself as a Joker’s grin painted on your subject, or as naughty doodles on a chloroform-soaked rag. So long as you’re having fun, the sky is the limit.
See you next week, students!

Please forgive me, Tutor, as I have been horrible with turning in my assignments these last few weeks! Life has been hectic as of late, pressing events have gotten in the way of my still life, but I should be caught up within the next week or so.
I would just like to tell you that it takes a lot to freak me out, so WAY TO GO! You are totally channeling Zelda from PET SEMATARY when you creep across the floor. *Great Job*
I have been having lots of fun and I’m definitely not evading ‘capture’!! fun, fun,fun………..
I’m so terribly sorry I have been slacking off, Tutor!!!! Life and its many complications have come bearing down on me as of late! I have full intentions of finishing my picture though! Even if it is only for half credit! x3
THANK YOU!
another great lesson, I have been keeping up with the lessons. though the homework is not posted. videocameras -like all electronics- hate me. would photos be okay? or like I don’t know. I can’t seem to get the video off the camcorder, so maybe I could record the camcorder video with my cellphone and email that? it makes me sad that I can’t turn in what I have been working on =(
I’m actually the first one to submit homework rather than being 5 weeks late as usual!! *does a happy dance* Ok, first of all here is a short film I made for this lesson…

Here is a picture of my still life submission itself…

And also I believe it has been awhile since you last visited Scotland and so I feel an incentive to come here again was in order. So here is a quickly sketched drawing of you using a very inventive means of travel to come to the UK….enjoy!!!

Chris, I don’t know exactly what’s going on in your last picture there…. but it’s beautiful.
Okay so I am a chef and i have fun with art everyday. My fun comes in the form of how I garnish and if you ask my wife or sister in law I will go on and on about my granishes and I really love doing them. So this week my homework is going to be some fun garnishes i have done this week at work.

*she dusts sawdust off of her and admires her handy work.* “Yes, this should fit her just fine”, she mutters to herself while fighting a nervous twitch of her head. A Twitch that started once SHE showed up.
She humms off key and hopes the other students and the Tutor enjoy relishing these details with her.

Although my subject cant do that cute little dance like you, and she was a little stiff when it came to posing she did have ever so much fun getting all made up for the camera.

That was fun! Here’s this week’s homework

I’m beyond behind in the lessons. But I’m catching up quick…
I’ve painted my straight lines -
http://mzlaveau.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2vp7mw
and I’ve sharpened my pencil –
http://mzlaveau.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2whidj
I’ve also organized my workspace -
http://mzlaveau.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2vp877
and I did hold my pencil correctly -
http://mzlaveau.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2whiwj
but all I got was this -
http://mzlaveau.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2whizm
So after using my powers of google-fu, I taught myself about transferring color copies onto paper with acetone -
http://mzlaveau.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2whj30
I then posed my subject -
http://mzlaveau.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2vp8ln
And with much delight, selected my subject -
http://mzlaveau.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2vp8ln
At this point I brushed up on the previous lessons, and discovered that I had definitely would not have wrecked the bell curve with my answers to the midterm. I got about two thirds right. Sigh.
Tomorrow, time to start some serious cramming. My canvas is calling, howling more like, and I’ve got some answers.
Bugger. Lesson VI, selecting my subject, should be this.

Mother trucking, frickin’ frackin’, #$^&%%!!
and I was on a roll.
This week’s homework was so fun. But the Tutor should have at least warned us that painting is addictive.
I did a lot of homework this week…and loved every minute of it.

Hiya!
Heres my homework submission

I had a lot of fun doing this, and i think i’d like to do some more like this again… i’m usually very rigid in my artworks, so doing this was really… invigorating
OK so wow I actually got done with this a bit early this week, I guess I really was having fun, lol!

Hello, Tutor! Here is my painting: http://mystpixi.deviantart.com/art/Painting-with-the-Tutor-10-175596177
And here is me having fun with unrelated art: http://mystpixi.deviantart.com/art/I-Fell-Off-My-Shelf-175586878
Well Tutor, I decided to take a break from the still life and do something else. I like doing these when I can, they’re free-hand, I don’t use references and restrict myself to whatever tools I can carry in my handbag.
http://elizabethunseelie.deviantart.com/art/Ducks-may-be-sinister-175607898
Also I did these, I usually have to ration my character design work as it’s really addictive, but you said to have fun so here you have it.

I decided to write a poem hope it’s legible.
A little upset that I misspelled fulfill not sure how to fix that…I’ll try not to be in such a hurry next time.
My name is Scully and I am painting the details with The Tutor.
I felt a little weird taking my art supplies to the airport but it was well worth it so I could continue to work on schedule from the hotel. Sadly crappy hotel lighting and camera phone ate much of the detail which was this weeks assignment.
Here is the first couple steps that mostly covered shading and finishing the jaw bone

However, I spent most of my time this week working on the wolf’s fur. I took a couple pictures during the process

I was going to post last week’s lesson video for nine, but after I edited it, I was not pleased at all. But I hope the Tutor was pleased with my photographic evidence for last week’s homework.
To make up for my shameful video failure last week, I present the most complicated video I have made so far!

Personally i think the back looks better lol. and its not actually completely finished i had some more images drawn onto the front of it but i have not been able to get to a store to get a paintbrush small enough as work is trying to kill me with to much work….but i am going out tomorrow to get the right paintbrushes and will have a completed photo up in a couple days if i dont drop dead of exhaustion
Better late then never… so my creativeness has fled from me and this lesson took longer then expected for me.

Have a good one!

So i was able to get to the store earlier today and though i didnt get a really small paintbrush like i wanted it still kinda turned out okay
http://babygoth666.deviantart.com/#/d2wnzml
that is the actual finished one
So, explanation:
I have discovered that YouTube does not like long videos of an .avi file type, and will cut them off for no good reason. My homework has been re-rendered as an .mpg and is now up on YT in it’s entirety.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Dhw11JQicE
If you saw my previous submission before it got taken down, just skip to 4:43 and watch from there. The video appears to be lower quality this time, but not much I can do about that now.
The actual painting: http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f16/Huginn_Muninn/Me/Class%20Is%20Now%20In%20Session/DSCN2732.jpg
(I am trying to let “It’s a learning experience” replace my previous mantra of “I WILL CUT A BITCH”.)
Tutor, I am so sorry that my homework is late this week. School just started, and its nearly impossible to do school homework and your homework during the week. I hope this doesn’t interfere with anything and I will get it done and turned in by this weekend. Once again, I am so sorry.

I forgot to put the link on here, too many pain medications making me loopy.

I’m glad I had the time to work out the kinks in my still life. The colors look better now; it doesn’t look as weird as it used to.
The details on my mask:

I took this homework seriously. I colored in a coloring book while at work. Yep this has nothing to do with my still life but it was fun to be creative and not worry about being perfect. I went in a different direction then most but that’s me.
http://girllunar.deviantart.com/art/The-Tutor-Lesson-X-178231460
I wrote a song on the drum that I used in my still life.
Then I forgot it.
It felt good
Again, I see little point in making a video to present a painting. I’m unhappy enough with the resolution I can show the painting at since it’s 11′x36′.

There’s a bit more description about what it is on the first link.
I kinda had to submit the details along with the dark to light…. http://talashowl.deviantart.com/#/d2yjrgg
Rest assured I followed your techniques to a tee!
Oh lookie, I did another homework assignment.
