Lesson I: How To Paint A Straight Line
Posted: May 28th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Lesson I | 122 Comments »Hello and welcome, pupils. My name is Terrance Zdunich, but, in this classroom, you may address me as The Tutor. Please take your seats. Don’t be shy, now. Fill in all of those open chairs in front of the screen. Class is about to begin!
“Painting A Still Life” is a 14-week course. Every Tuesday, a new lesson will be released. How well you do in this class will depend on you, pupils, but attendance is mandatory, homework will be given, and rules will be strictly enforced.
Enrollment is always open, so click the “Enroll” button to be notified of new lessons from The Tutor. Feel free to recommend this course to your friends and family. The Tutor does not discriminate enrollees based on race, age, gender, or creed. The only prerequisite is absolute obedience.
Now, eyes forward, backs straight… Class is in session! I give you Lesson I: How To Paint A Straight Line:
Congratulations on completing your first lesson, pupils. Your homework assignment is to collect the following supplies: 1 medium, round paintbrush; a straightedge (any rigid surface will suffice—wood, metal, plastic); some paints (I am using watered-down acrylic, but your medium is up to you); and a painting surface that suits your medium (illustration board, canvas, watercolor paper, cardboard, etc.).
Once you have your supplies, place your straightedge at a 135° angle against your surface, carefully drag your paint-dipped brush along the angled edge, and start making lines!
Once you feel comfortable with your line-making abilities, submit your progress in the “Comments” section below. Photographs or scans of your work are fine, but links to videos of you demonstrating your new skills are preferred. Please begin your video submissions by stating your name and what you’re doing—e.g. “My name is Barnabas, and I am painting a straight line with The Tutor.”
At the end of this 14-week course, those who have practiced diligently and completed all of the lessons will receive a progress report and a letter grade from The Tutor. One exceptional student will be named valedictorian. He or she will receive an original piece of art from The Tutor, and a special feature within this lesson plan.
While technique is important, The Tutor is also interested in seeing your creativity and originality. Don’t be afraid to be different. Don’t be intimidated if you feel your art skills aren’t up to par with some of the other entrees. And don’t forget to have fun!
I look forward to your seeing your progress, pupils. See you next week for Lesson II.

If Bob Ross had been one scary dude this is what my Sunday mornings would have been like.
The complexities of a straight line…I’m going to mull this over for the rest of the day.
I can not wait to go home and start my lesson!!!
Man…this is different from my first art class in high school…although you and my teacher both seem to love roaches (we have a rubber roach about 3 feet long; he’s the art department’s mascot).
The image of my straight lines can be found on my DeviantArt page!
Dark but brilliant with a signature creepiness as well as a splash of black humor. You fit all my criteria for the perfect art teacher! You will be recieving my straight line submission by next lesson! Thank you tutor!
Oh my…now *this* is an art class I can sink my teeth into! *evil grin*
very interesting
Thank You Tudor May I Have Another?
This is intriguing. And i think i’ll actually do it. Are we supposed to just paint lines or the actual box?
Dear Tutor,
I am currently seeking an appropriate medium of the proper color and consistency. I shall post my lesson soon..
Ugh good job doing this right on time for exams… Now I can’t do it…
looks soo fun though
If I had to choose anyone to follow me around and narrate my life, it would, without a doubt, be Terrance. Such an amazing voice almost sends me into childish fan-girl fits!
I’ll get on it.
Wow, I really enjoyed this! I’m working with paint now actually, except the wall is my canvas at the moment. But I will do my homework and a video will be coming to your comment board soon
I can’t wait for what’s in store for lesson II
I just finished my video for lesson 1 you can find it by clicking on my name or by following the link below…

I love Terrance’s voice. Its so calming and yet so creepy at the same time
Once I get my hands on the proper supplies that the lesson requires, I shall do my homework straight away.
No video camera so photos will have to suffice
I pretty much stayed within the “lines” for the first lesson

I was operating under the impression that Cambodian orphans drew all your straight lines.
(And as soon as I aquire the proper brush, I will post a video of my progress.)
This is my first lesson ever painting which is obvious…lol. I’m having fun though and I feel very priveleged to be taught by the Tutor. I look forward to the next lesson!

I am really excited about learning from the “master”. Peace, Margo
Not the best with paint…. Pencil is really my thing, but it’s good to explore other mediums….At least my lines are more or less straight. ^^;;

Will this piece for lesson one be used throughout the course or used again? Are the lines the art or is it ment to frame the object that we will be working on later?
Hello Students,
Some of you had questions about lesson one’s homework assignment. In response, I’ve added a “Homework” link to the top of the lesson plan to better delineate the course and the lesson exercises.

This promises to be a very entertaining and enlightening event! Unfortunately, a summer full of doctor’s appointments and future preparations for my own schooling, along with a severe lack of artistic talent, will prevent me from partaking. However, I wish everyone the best of luck with their artwork and creative growth, and will still eagerly follow all video tutorials. From the entries that have already been posted, the pupils that will be attending already have an abundance of artistic ability and vast imagination, which will make it all the more exciting to follow!
I have been a naughty pupil. First week of homework and I ran away to LA to a premiere party before I did my assignment.
I was not sure how I was going to pull it together. Then something seemingly unrelated happened proving that I am again Karma’s Bitch. I must learn not to tease my daughter, as the resulting falling and injuring are never fun. So from my injuries came my motivation and the following video:

This is a link to my photobucket account. The first picture is my supplies: blank canvas paper, medium brush, and watercolors. The second is my test trial I guess you could say. The first six lines are when I held the ruler below my hand and the last is without the ruler because I wanted to see how shaky my hands are.
All of my ‘homework’ is going to be in the same album, so bear with me T.

G-day! I’m Cathy, your exchange student from Australia! I’m sorry that my first lesson is late….I had a slight problem with my host family. Everything is sorted you now, although I’m still gettting used to some of our cultural differences. My room in the Attic looks a little like torture chamber, but I am assured that all houses use whips to chase pests from the house. I’m still confused as to what the chains are for but…. to each their own!
Homework will be forthcoming. xoxo

Tutor,
I did not realize that a straight line could be this hard. It was especially difficult when not using the straight edge against the paper. But I found out why it is best to use your technique on my test page, getting paint all over your straight edge and then setting it down on your canvas makes for a messy smudged canvas. Mine isn’t exactly what I wanted, but I am sure I will get better with time. Now off to sharpen my pencil!
Here is my homework, Sir:

[...] For example, only 31% of you answered #7 correctly: When painting a straight line, to what degree should we angle our straightedge? The most popular answer given was d.) 180°, which is not an angle at all (as far as our straightedges are concerned!). 180° is the equivalent of resting our straightedges flat against our drawing surfaces when the point of the exercise is to angle them so we can run the body of our paintbrushes along a raised edge. Placing our rulers flat against the canvas will not only result in sloppy lines, but in messy straightedges covered in paint. This information was originally outlined in Lesson I’s Lesson Plan. [...]
