Lesson XI: Highlights
Posted: August 17th, 2010 | Author: The Tutor | Filed under: Lesson XI | 49 Comments »Top of the morning, pupils… and what a nice morning it is: the soothing hum of schoolyard vending machines, the pitter-patter of tiny sneakers, the lullaby of backpack zippers… they welcome us to another class together. As always, The Tutor is pleased to see you.
There’s no sense in dillydallying on such a lovely day… so let’s take our seats, flick on the fluorescents, and shed some light on this week’s topic: Lesson XI: Highlights:
Outstanding! You’ve crushed another lesson, students! This week’s homework assignment is to apply highlights to your painted still life.
In painting, highlights are the most strongly illuminated portions of our subject(s): the sparkle on her strawberry Janes, the dartle on her strawberry braids, the twinkle on her strawberry stains…
Depending on the strength of the light source and the quality of surfaces within our still life, the highlights will vary: some paintings require only a dab or two of highlighted pigment; other works – like those containing highly reflective items – will necessitate more. As a rule of thumb, however, less is more when painting highlights.
Since highlights represent the strongest, most piercing light that’s bouncing off of our subjects, paint these accents opaquely. Pure, unmixed white may be used for this assignment.
See you next week, students!

I cannot foresee how The Tutor can top his new found creepy statement. Once you pass the “I know whether the corpse is a virgin or not” mark, you’re in some pretty freaky land.
Good job! It was worth staying up til 1:09AM
I hate the easy lessons. I get them done too quickly then I actually have to wait more than a few hours for the next one. 8P
Anyways, on to the highlights! e.o I just realized that on my last homework eyes were a big theme and the first thing you talk about it eyes…. o.O Interesting…
I love your baby blues (eyes)!!
I’m getting a lot of satisfaction out of this project Tutor, I had a particularly rough day today, and I was able to get into my painting and push away all of the BS:)
I’ve caught up on two more lessons -
large to small -
http://mzlaveau.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2wnkf7
I ended up adding my trusty can for miscellaneous items for the still life as well as the sap. (My weapon of choice;) or maybe that should be :O as my neighborhood can be a bit dicey, and I keep it around for this reason).
I then did the back to front portion of our syllabus. -

I ended up using a sponge, as my brushstrokes were showing to much for my liking. Also, I have a tentative title, based on something my Father said to me once, the text of which might go in the light space
in the center. I also have plans for a “miscellaneous item” from my tin, but I’m gonna keep that under wraps for now. Also, I always use some element of collage in my work, and so the picture of me (age 5) and the frog skeleton that is one of my recent photos were also added.
Man, my posts get wordy. Thanks for your patience Tutor.
G-Day Tutor!!
Here ’tis!
Well, looky here, I’m actually early for a change!

Erm, yeah, so I added some dashes of white paint to highlight various parts of the painting. Pretty basic, but I think that’s the point?
So, until next time Tutor,
Have a Good One!
Regards,
Cathy
P.S. Just a reminder, next weeks homework will be late as I’m going to be in a nut house visiting crazy people, otherwise known as family! hahahaha! (Help Me!)
Hello fellow students! The highlight of my week was applying highlights to my work. This week I’m doing it “comic book style”!

Thanks Amanda!
Dear Tutor,
I’m so very sorry I haven’t gotten last weeks homework in. I apologize even more because I probably won’t get this weeks in. I’m moving back to Cedar City in just a few days and was forced to pack up everything I needed for this class. Hopefully I will get everything in and done by Wednesday. I do hope you will forgive my late assignments.

So, my homework is technically done but im gonna wait till the last minute to hand it in again just in case my brain decides to go back to solid form and i think of something else to do to it.
THE MASKED ARTIST IS BACK

Maybe some of you have already seen this, but it’s a must-see for any Repo fan. And if you HAVE seen it, it’s worth another look. This will make you smile and send a thank you note to whoever made it.

I do have no artistic talent and I am no chicken, so stop the wing flapping and the chicken noises! At least I can admit I have no artistic talent and You know why I watch ‘The Tutor’. Unless you consider doing my nails fancy-like(myself, w/o help) and painting details on woodwork artistic talent.
But I do admire those of you who do have artistic talent. More power to you!

Tutor,
I managed to finish the last three lessons today. Again, I really enjoyed it. I don’t want to even say how many years it’s been since I picked up a brush, but let’s just say I was a student at the time.

At the top of the last link you will see the comment my Dad made. The entire story is longer, and it’s on the envelope. I won’t belabor it here. (He’s not an ogre, really).
I’d forgotten Tutor, how challenging painting can be. I mostly draw and do what a friend calls holly-hobby, craftsy-waftsy stuff. Jewelry and crochet and whatnot;)
Though the yardstick and bleeding red pen are great motivators, I am seriously challenged when it comes to getting a crisp clean edge.
Practice makes perfect right?
Ok… I guess I am the WORST cheerleader ever… (Not to mention gentern)….but I tried… E for effort?

Here is my latest video submission for The Tutor’s consideration. I’m beginning to feel I should give a plotline for these little movies (one exists I think) but i’ll leave it your imagination. All suggestions and guesses are welcome
The soundtrack features a lot of feedback to create a laughing effect so best to turn down the volume a bit.

My apologies Tutor– I assure you that though the homework is done, you can’t see it, due to technical difficulties. For the same reason, I will be unable to attend Tutor Chat this week, but I forsee the end of my problems of this nature within the next few days with the arrival of my new computer.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter, and I accept any demerits to my homework that may be caused by my tardiness.

Seemed silly to create a video to display a painting, especially when it can be shown on Photobucket at a higher resolution than on Youtube.
